Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the wrong digit,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
